He is a painter whose work concerns the principles of mathematical theories, complex algorithms, and economic formulas. Recent solo exhibitions include Several Bellonas, Lisson Gallery, New York (2022–23); Intervals and Displacements, Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York (2022–23); and Intervals, Lisson Gallery, Beijing (2023–24). Recent group exhibitions include those at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2015); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2016); and Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York (2016). Thompson lives in New York.

A reflection on our bodies’ intimate relationship with tools, Gordon Hall’s Tone Trio unfolds within the Chelsea Recreation Center’s weight room after hours. Complex machines of ambiguous functionality wait for us in the dark, morphing this utilitarian space into a dreamlike stage. Tone Trio is informed by Hall’s furniture-based sculptures and follows a performance script crafted from the artist’s previous event, Symposium for Experts and Amateurs. The latter, which took place on March 24, 2024, at the Center’s basketball gym, featured brief talks by community members about how to do everyday jobs and tasks. About the program seriesActivations is a series of interdisciplinary public programs designed by artists in response to civic spaces in New York. Each activation invites participants to encounter a ready-made site through the lens of an artistic practice, reimagining them as spaces of creative possibility. All are welcome to participate. Gordon Hall is an artist whose work encompasses sculpture, performance, and writing. Their sculptures emerge from the world of furniture and are often put to use by performing bodies who test out possible engagements with Hall’s specific yet open-ended objects. Hall’s work explores our practices of looking, inviting forms of reading that defy established norms of legibility. Hall has had solo presentations at the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center at Rensselaer, Troy, New York; MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Oregon; Temple Contemporary, Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia; and The Renaissance Society, Chicago; among other venues. Their current research addresses the experience of waiting as a paradoxical convergence of vulnerability and freedom.

For the duration of Rita McBride: Arena Momentum at Dia Beacon, an expanding body of artists, performers, writers, musicians, and dancers activates physical and virtual spaces as part of a series of engagements with McBride’s Arena (1997). The series, collectively called Momentum, is initiated by the artist with the experimental performance collective discoteca flaming star (founded by Cristina Gomez Barrio and Wolfgang Mayer) and artist and choreographer Alexandra Waierstall. This May, Waierstall—who has engaged in dialogue with Arena in various contexts since 2016—presents choreographic interludes as part of the Momentum series. These interludes bring together New York–based professional dancers as well as dancers from Germany and Greece with whom Waierstall frequently collaborates, creating a unique gathering that fosters connection between these communities, the public, and the physical space of Arena. Each day, the dancers make cyclical encounters with the work and one another, growing and changing individually and as a group, as the choreography opens a space for contemplation in which everyone present can find themselves. Visitors are invited to walk and sit among the dancers as the performance unfolds. Please note that the Momentum performances will involve nudity. Photography in the Rita McBride: Arena Momentum galleries will not be permitted on the event dates. This is the third iteration of Momentum at Dia Beacon. The fourth performance will take place in November 2024. discoteca flaming star (DFS) is an interdisciplinary, collaborative group that aims to be a space where all kinds of artists can experiment with different paths for contemporary aesthetic praxis, searching for its limits, and avoiding processes of formalization. Through conceptual, visual, and musical transfers, they create performances, sculptures, drawings, stages, and situations whose foremost intention is to question and challenge the memory of the public, transforming old desires and finding invented pasts, or pasts which never occurred. Their work has been shown at numerous venues, including Artists Space, New York; Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Madrid; De Appel Amsterdam; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; MUMOK, Vienna; Tate Modern, London; The Kitchen, New York; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Cristina Gómez Barrio and Wolfgang Mayer have been the base of DFS since 1998. Currently DFS are: CGB, Sofia Lomba, WM, and Sara Pereira. Cristina Gómez Barrio was born in the Alhambra, Spain, in 1973. She studied in Berlin, Madrid, and Munich, and participated in the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Independent Study Program, New York. She works with drawing, performance, photography, and dreams. She lives in Berlin. Wolfgang Mayer was born in Wertach, Germany, in 1967. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, and participated in the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Independent Study Program, New York, where he studied with Ron Clark. He works primarily with drawing, shimmering dust, video, and performance. His projects, including those with discoteca flaming star, have been shown internationally. Mayer lives in Berlin. Rita McBride was born in Des Moines in 1960 and lives in Düsseldorf and Los Alamos, California. She received a BA from Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia. In 1988, she began exploring architectural and sculptural form in works ranging from small-scale objects to public commissions. Her major public commissions include Mae West, Munich (2011); Bells and Whistles, the New School, New York (2014); and Obelisk of Tutankhamun, Cologne (2017). Major presentations include Rita McBride: Public Tilt, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (2014–15); Rita McBride: Gesellschaft, Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover, Germany, and Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (2015–16); Rita McBride: Explorer, Wiels Centre d’Art Contemporain, Brussels (2017–18); Particulates, Dia Chelsea, New York (2017–18); National Chain 2020/Social Practices (in collaboration with Alexandra Waierstall and Fontys Dance Academy), Museum De Pont, Tilburg, the Netherlands (2021); and Rita McBride: Particulates, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2023). In 2001, she initiated a series of genre-bending publications that often use anonymous, collective writing structures. In 2018, she also initiated Particulates, an anthology of science fiction, edited by Nalo Hopkinson, that accompanied her exhibition Particulates at Dia Chelsea. McBride’s first project with Dia was a performative lecture on the work of Rosemarie Trockel as part of the 2003 Artists on Artists Lecture Series. Alexandra Waierstall was born in England and raised in Cyprus. Her conceptual choreographic practice attends to the relationships between time, memory, presence, and embodiment, and unfolds from ongoing dialogues with dancers as collaborators. Waierstall advocates for a form of radical attentiveness in different contexts, including theaters, galleries, museums, publications, and public spaces. Since 2016, she has choreographed engagements with Rita McBride’s Arena (1997). Her projects have been co-produced by tanzhaus nrw Düsseldorf, and she has presented works at the Musée du Louvre, Paris (2017); Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London (2018); and Bauhaus Museum Dessau, Germany (2020), among other institutions. Waierstall has choreographed work for the National Dance Company Wales and tanzmainz, Staatstheater Mainz, Germany. She lives in Düsseldorf. Additional collaborators Volker Bertelmann, Stavros Gasparatos, Randy Gibson, Sofia Lomba, Sara Pereira, Lucia Vornhein. Performers Olivia Ancona, Ying Yun Chen, Scott Jennings, Amy Josh, Georgios Kotsifakis, Ioanna Paraskevopoulou, Evangelia Randou, Eftychia Stefanou, Karolina Szymura. Rita McBride: Arena Momentum is organized by Alexis Lowry, former curator at Dia, with Emily Markert, curatorial assistant. Public programming for the exhibition is organized by Matilde Guidelli-Guidi, curator and co–department head at Dia, with Emily Markert, and produced with Kim Golding, programs associate. Presence, Absence, and Hallucination is a performance, reading, and sound activation of space-time dimensions in order to pressurize modes and forms of reality (in its glitchy, elusive, shapeshifting capacity) as it is perceived, experienced, and documented—ecologically, historically, sociologically, philosophically, and ever more frequently using artificial intelligence. Three prose texts by Brenda Iijima act as reference points for a collaboration with sound artist Johann Diedrick that opens pathways and trace resonances into the prismatic densities of the past, present, and future. Brenda Iijima is a poet, novelist, playwright, choreographer, and visual artist. She is the author of nine books of poetry. Her artistic and conceptual interests occur at the intersections and mutations of genre, mode, receptivity, and field of study. In her current work she engages with submerged and occluded histories, other-than-human expressiveness, and telluric awareness in all forms. A novella, A roundtable, unanimous dreamers chime in, written in collaboration with Janice Lee, was published by Meekling Press in 2023. In 2024, two of Iijima’s works have been published: the play Daily Life in China with elis press, as well as the novel Presence with the University of Georgia Press. Iijima is the founding editor-publisher of Portable Press @ Yo-Yo Labs. She lives in Brooklyn. Johann Diedrick is an artist and engineer who makes listening rooms, spaces for encountering new sonic possibilities off-the-grid. He works to surface resonant histories of past interactions inscribed in material and embedded in space, peeling back layers to reveal hidden memories and untold stories. He shares his tools and techniques through listening tours, workshops, and open-source hardware and software. He is the founder of A Quiet Life, a sonic engineering and research studio that designs and builds audio-related software and hardware products. He is a 2023–25 Just Tech fellow and 2023–24 Performance AIRspace Resident at Abrons Art Center, New York. His work has been featured in The Wire and Musicworks and presented at the Ars Electronica Festival, Linz, Austria; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; and MoMA PS1, Queens.
