Josiah McElheny

Josiah McElheny lives and works in New York. His works in sculpture, performance and film—as well as writing and curatorial projects—have often focused on connecting social and political history to aesthetics. In conjunction with the Dia's collaboration with CCS Bard for the Blinky Palermo retrospective, in Bard's galleries McElheny is exhibiting a series of responses to Palermo's wall drawings and paintings. Also on view at CCS Bard is a collaborative curatorial project between McElheny, Lynne Cooke, and Tom Eccles, which juxtaposes physical elements from domestic spaces with artworks from the collection and explores the psychic interior as a subject. Recent publications include The Light Club (2010), a meditation on the utopian thinking of early-twentieth century writer and artist Paul Scheerbart; the monograph Josiah McElheny: A Prism (2010); A Space for an Island Universe (2009), a volume about his ongoing collaboration with cosmologist David Weinberg and a remarkable large scale installation at the Palacio Cristal in Madrid. In 2003 at Dia, McElheny presented a talk on Donald Judd as part of the Artists on Artists lecture series; this talk was published in abbreviated form in Artforum in the summer of 2004 under the title Invisible Hand.
