Artist Biography

John Chamberlain was born in 1927 in Rochester, Indiana and raised in Chicago, Illinois. After serving in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946, he attended the Art Institute of Chicago and Black Mountain College, before moving to New York City in 1956. In 1961, one of his early works in scrap automobile parts was included in the “Art of Assemblage” exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, after which he began showing regularly with Leo Castelli Gallery. Chamberlain’s sculptures have been featured in numerous exhibitions internationally and most recently a retrospective of his career was mounted at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2012). John Chamberlain died on December 21, 2011.
