Sol LeWitt

Sol LeWitt's "Paragraphs on Conceptual Art" (1967)* and "Sentences on Conceptual Art" (1969)** articulated the theoretical underpinnings and central tenets of Conceptual Art as he and members of his generation perceived them. Written at a time of close friendship between Darboven and LeWitt, this sentence in particular seems to have been inspired by her Konstruktion drawings:

"If words are used, and they proceed from ideas about art, then they are art and not literature; numbers are not mathematics."
*S. LeWitt, "Paragraphs on Conceptual Art," Artforum V/10 (Summer 1967): 80.
**S. LeWitt "Sentences on Conceptual Art," 0-9, no.5 (1969).
