An exhibition of new work by Lawrence Weiner will open at Dia Center for the Arts, 548 West 22nd Street, on April 4,1991. Weiner has titled the exhibition "Displacement." Hours are Thursday through Sunday, 12 noon to 6 pm. The exhibition will be on view through June 21, 1991, when the facility closes for the summer. It will re-open on September 12,1991, continuing through February 2,1992.

Weiner is known for his use of language as the raw material for his art. Since 1968, he has used the following declaration of intent: With relation to the various manners of use:

l. The artist may construct the piece

2. The piece may be fabricated

3. The piece need not be built

Each being equal and consistent with the intent of the artist.

The decision as to condition rests with the receiver upon the occasion of receivership. Using the space as an integral component of the work, Weiner will use walls, doors, the floor, and columns of the third floor of 548 West 22nd Street for this exhibition.

The work will also be presented in a book designed by the artist charting the conception of the work through to its realization. A poster designed by Weiner will also be available. Weiner was born in New York City in 1942 and lives and works in New York City and Amsterdam, Holland. His work has been exhibited widely, especially in Europe, with a retrospective organized in 1988 at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He has made numerous artists' books, and a retrospective of the books organized in 1989 by Portikus in Frankfurt will be on view at the Palais des Beaux Arts, Brussels opening June 6, 1991.

A catalogue raisonné of his films and tapes entitled "Show and Tell" is forthcoming in October from Imschoot Uitgevers, Ghent, Belgium.

The Printed Matter Bookstore at Dia at 77 Wooster Street will present a survey of Weiner's posters, 1965-present. The posters will be shown, April 2-27, courtesy of Art Metropole, Toronto.
