Director of Communications

Dia Art Foundation seeks an experienced Director of Communications. This is a full-time position based at Dia’s office in New York City. The Director of Communications plans and implements strategic media relations, communications, and marketing for Dia’s exhibitions, programs, sites, special events, and other outreach efforts. This position provides counsel and advice across the organization on how to raise Dia’s overall visibility and enhance its reputation. The position supervises the Digital Communications Associate, works closely with staff from other departments, and reports to Dia’s Deputy Director of Advancement.

Dia, based in New York City, is committed to advancing, realizing, and preserving the vision of extraordinary artists. A nonprofit founded in 1974, Dia collects the work of some of the most renowned artists of the last half-century, presents long-term, site-specific projects, executes new commissions, and produces scholarly publications related to its exhibitions and collection.

Responsibilities include:

  • Create, implement, and oversee strategies and timelines for advertising, communications, marketing, public relations, and social media
  • Direct all media efforts and serve as a spokesperson for the institution; cultivate, develop, and maintain relationships with media, proactively positioning Dia’s programs and key initiatives
  • Manage the institution’s relationship with an external public relations firm, ensuring communication of clear goals and the firm’s delivery of them
  • Supervise and work closely with the Digital Communications Associate to align priorities and goals, and manage ongoing performance and annual evaluations; in collaboration with this staff member, oversee the department’s digital communications activities, including developing and managing content for the website and social media
  • Create all written materials generated by the communications department
  • Develop a collaborative cross-marketing approach with advertisers and community, regional, and state partners to maximize marketing dollars and multiply messaging opportunities
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure all communications needs are met and to ensure that internal messages are consistent with external messages
  • Participate in the review process for exhibition tour contracts as related to communications
  • Assist Trustees, Director, and senior management with talking points for interviews, institutional events, and public speaking activities
  • Work with the Graphic Designer and Director of Publications to manage the institutional aesthetic and graphic identity across materials
  • Coordinate with visitor services to maintain updated program information and develop market research across sites as needed
  • Coordinate with the curatorial and publications departments to select images for press and other communications activities
  • Provide crisis communications counsel as needed
  • Develop and maintain departmental budget
  • Remain apprised of developments at other cultural institutions and best practices in the field


  • Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field; master’s degree preferred
  • 7–10 years of strategic communications or public relations experience at a cultural institution or public relations firm
  • Must possess strong relationships with media
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal under time constraints
  • Excellent project management and decision-making skills
  • Experience managing staff effectively, and working collaboratively with teams
  • Strong interpersonal skills; individual must be personable and diplomatic in working with Dia’s Board of Trustees, staff, and the general public
  • Knowledge of digital and traditional marketing trends for arts organizations/museums
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word, and social media tools
