Based in New York, Dia Art Foundation is committed to advancing, realizing, and preserving the vision of extraordinary artists. A nonprofit founded in 1974, Dia was established to help artists achieve visionary projects that might not otherwise be realized because of scale or scope. Dia presents long-term, site-specific projects; executes new commissions; collects artists’ work in depth; organizes extensive education and public programs in Beacon and New York City; and produces publications related to its exhibitions and collection.
Today, Dia is a constellation of eleven public locations and sites. In addition to Dia Beacon, Dia Bridgehampton, and Dia Chelsea, Dia maintains and operates a number of commissions, long-term installations, and site-specific projects, notably focused on Land art, in New York, the western United States, and Germany. The institution’s plans over the next five years include construction, renovation, and expansion variously at its New York locations (Dia Beacon, Dia Chelsea, Dia SoHo, and Walter De Maria’s The New York Earth Room  and The Broken Kilometer ); the strengthening of the endowment; and a commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) initiatives internally and externally.
Dia seeks a talented Director of Human Resources responsible for managing a department of two and supporting a staff of 160+ located in New York City; Beacon and Bridgehampton, New York; and New Mexico. The ideal candidate will have solid knowledge of and experience in all HR functions; demonstrate excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills; think critically and solve problems; and maintain professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality. Stepping into this important role at an exciting and critical time in Dia’s history, this person will report to the Chief Financial Officer and collaborate with senior leadership to assess and plan workforce needs, strengthen staff engagement; drive diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion initiatives forward; and work with the team to address the many challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dia’s galleries and offices in Beacon are open, but the Chelsea galleries and office are closed with staff working remotely. Once offices reopen, this position will be required to work two days per week in NYC and three days per week in Beacon with travel to Dia’s other sites as needed. Must have availability during the weekends to address time-sensitive HR issues for staff who work on Saturdays and Sundays. These situations can often be handled remotely but may occasionally require presence in the offices.
- Lead the human resources department to develop strategic plans and implement initiatives that support institutional goals. Plan and direct the daily activities of the department, including the supervision of an HR Associate.
- Consult with management and provide guidance on all critical HR matters.
- Serve as a resource to managers and employees on employee-relations concerns. Provide advice and support to resolve sensitive issues, working with legal counsel, as needed.
- Contribute research, counsel, and leadership to the continued development and implementation of DEAI priorities.
- Ensure that the culture, policies, and benefits package provide an equitable and inclusive workplace and maintain Dia’s ability to recruit and retain highly qualified staff.
- Manage and work with a consultant to update the compensation structure to include job analysis, salary benchmarking, and revised salary bands. Train managers and educate staff on salary banding and decision processes. Will be responsible for keeping compensation structure updated, overseeing salary administration, and guiding salary decisions while prioritizing equity.
- Oversee and administer workforce planning. Together with department managers, assess and forecast staffing needs and budget for each fiscal year. Oversee adherence to staffing budgets for all departments.
- Facilitate the recruitment process in an efficient, equitable, and legally compliant manner.
- Plan and support employee onboarding, engagement, and retention programs and activities.
- Oversee and administer employee performance review process, and provide guidance to managers on performance management and employee development plans. Consult with management and approve decisions on disciplinary actions and/or terminations.
- Oversee administration and compliance of employee benefit programs. Work with benefit brokers to proactively research and propose the best options and additional benefits when appropriate; review cost-sharing strategies; oversee annual renewal and open enrollment; and educate employees on all benefits. Administer the 401(k) plan and maintain fiduciary responsibilities, in conjunction with the finance department.
- Ensure institutional compliance with federal and state employment laws and regulations.
- Update and maintain the employee handbook and ensure compliance of policies and procedures, and provide guidance and clarification to managers and staff around application of policies to workplace issues.
- Work closely with finance staff regarding overlapping HR and payroll matters.
- Analyze trends and metrics within HR services to proactively address issues.
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in human resources management preferred
- SHRM–SCP or SPHR certification highly desired
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in human resources management with demonstrated experience and competence in all functional areas of HR
- Excellent knowledge of federal and state employment regulations and requirements
- Awareness and commitment to DEAI. Demonstrated leadership in this area preferred
- Ability to exercise discretion and handle projects of a confidential nature in a professional and timely manner
- Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly diplomacy, negotiation, and influence
- Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills
- Prior experience with ADP Workforce Now or similar HRIS system
- Familiarity with the art world and non-profit management helpful
