On September 16, 1999, Dia Center for the Arts will open the third and final part of an exhibition of the work of German artist Thomas Schütte. This installation, entitled "In Medias Res," will be on view on the fourth floor of Dia's galleries at 548 West 22nd Street, New York City, through February 2000. Dia is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday, 12:00 to 6:00 pm.

"In Medias Res," the last in a three-part presentation devoted to the work of this mid-career artist, will be composed of two series of ceramics, several monumental sculptures, and a new suite of works on paper, among other recent works.

As evidenced in Dia's two previous installations, which spanned some 20 years of activity, Schütte's work ranges widely, from early architectural projects to small-scale modeled figures and proposals for monuments, from extensive series of drawings to banners, flags, and photographic suites. Although his art relates to many of the canonical genres of sculpture, including statuary and memorials, and architectural embellishment, he typically undermines these familiar forms in order to reinvent them.

Thomas Schütte was born in Oldenburg, Germany, in 1954. Since graduating from the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1981, he has had numerous solo exhibitions in Europe, and he participated in both Documenta 9 (1992) and Documenta 10 (1997) in Kassel. This tripartite exhibition at Dia Center for the Arts will be his most substantial to date.
