Walter De Maria

The Broken Kilometer, 1979

Overview

Walter De Maria’s The Broken Kilometer has been on view to the public since it was created in 1979. Located at 393 West Broadway in New York, this work is composed of five hundred highly polished, round, solid brass rods. These rods are placed in five parallel rows of one hundred rods each. If all the elements were laid end to end, the total length of the sculpture would measure 1,000 meters. This work is a companion piece to De Maria’s 1977 The Vertical Earth Kilometer in Kassel, Germany.
