Throughout her career, Camille Norment has investigated what she terms cultural psychoacoustics: the relationships and contingencies between sound, culture, and perception. Building on her commission for Dia Chelsea, Plexus (2022), this artist’s book seeks formally and conceptually to imbue a sonic sensibility and extend understandings of the artist’s practice.

On the occasion of the publication’s launch, Norment will be in dialogue with artists Seth Cluett and James Hoff about the interrelations of sound (art) and print media, as well as how the book form can reflect time-based work. As an extension of Plexus, Cluett and Hoff collaborated with Norment on “Context and Constellations,” an iterative and interactive library of text and audio with which visitors are invited to engage in Dia Chelsea’s program space. Extending this collaborative mode to a live conversation, the artists will also speak to how the library’s materials are accrued and how text and distributed media can provide new and critical context to the experience of listening.

This program is presented as part of The 2022 NY Art Book Fair Classroom. Hosted by Dia Art Foundation, 537 W. 22 Street, The Classroom is a long-running program that provides space for artists, writers, designers, and publishers to highlight new releases and fosters dialogue around important themes in artists’ book publishing. The program is organized in collaboration with David Senior, Director of Library & Archives at SFMOMA. The 2022 NYABF is taking place October 13–16 at 548 W. 22nd St.
