Join us for an engaging conversation with landscape architect Sara Zewde and architect Frida Escobedo, two dynamic creatives transforming art institutions in New York and beyond. Studio Zewde has recently been selected to design the south garden at Dia Beacon, while Frida Escobedo has been appointed as the architect for the new Modern & Contemporary Wing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Following an introduction by Dia’s Nathalie de Gunzburg Director Jessica Morgan, Zewde and Escobedo will engage in dialogue with Deputy Director of Program Humberto Moro.
Sara Zewde is the founding principal of Studio Zewde, a New York–based design firm practicing landscape architecture, urbanism, and public art. Listed in Architectural Digest’s AD100 and recipients of the Emerging Voice award from the Architectural League of New York, the firm is celebrated for its design methods that sync culture, ecology, and craft. Zewde is also an Assistant Professor in Practice of Landscape Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, New Haven, and is currently writing a book on her research on Frederick Law Olmsted's journeys through the Slave South. Zewde holds a master’s degree in landscape architecture from Harvard University Graduate School of Design; a master’s in city planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge; and a bachelor’s in sociology and statistics from Boston University.
Frida Escobedo established her eponymous studio in Mexico City in 2006. The studio’s reputation—initially built on the strength of a series of competition-winning projects in her native country—has achieved global scope in 2018, when she received the prestigious appointment to design the annual Serpentine Pavilion in London’s Kensington Gardens, becoming the youngest architect to that date to undertake the project. Escobedo is the recipient of numerous accolades, including the Architectural League of New York’s Young Architects’ Forum award (2009), Ibero-American Architecture and Urbanism Biennial prize (2014), the Architectural Review Emerging award (2016), and Architectural League of New York’s Emerging Voices award (2017). Most recently, the Créateurs Design Association & Awards has named Escobedo as the recipient of Le Prix Charlotte Perriand for 2024.
