He is a painter whose work concerns the principles of mathematical theories, complex algorithms, and economic formulas. Recent solo exhibitions include Several Bellonas, Lisson Gallery, New York (2022–23); Intervals and Displacements, Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York (2022–23); and Intervals, Lisson Gallery, Beijing (2023–24). Recent group exhibitions include those at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2015); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2016); and Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York (2016). Thompson lives in New York.

Dia is once again partnering with Printed Matter on the NY Art Book Fair, hosting the fair's Classroom series at Dia Chelsea. On Friday, April 26, 4–5 pm, as part of the Classroom Series, Dia presents The Book of Night: A conversation with James Hoff and Hannah B Higgins, in conjunction with the exhibition Mary Heilmann: Starry Night currently on view at Dia Beacon. On Saturday, April 27, 12–6 pm, Gerardo Ismael Madera collaborates with members of Dia Teens on a table for the NYABF Block Party. Using multimedia tools including sound recorders, scanning wands, cyanotypes, and charcoal rubbings, the teens will record and document West 22nd street, the home of their weekly program. Visitors are welcome to engage with the ephemera produced from and on the street, inviting dialogue on the role of documentation in shaping interpretations of a site. On the occasion of the fair, Dia Chelsea will exceptionally be open on Sunday, April 28, 12–6 pm. The NYABF 2024 Classroom series is organized in collaboration with David Senior, director of library and archives at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Emmy Catedral, curator of public programs at the Center for Art, Research and Alliance, New York; hosted by Dia Art Foundation at 537 W 22nd Street; and is generously supported by Cargo.

The Book of Night: A conversation with James Hoff and Hannah B Higgins

Throughout her career, artist Mary Heilmann has experimented with the book form. One of her earliest experiments is The Book of Night (1970), currently on view at Dia Beacon as part of the exhibition Mary Heilmann: Starry Night. A bound compendium of unstretched canvases referencing astronomical constellations, this large, children’s book–like work hems painting into a three-dimensional object, blurring the boundaries between media and providing a tactile interface for interacting with the cosmos. On the occasion of this exhibition and taking The Book of Night and its 2016 facsimile, published by 303inPrint and produced by Small Editions, as a point of departure, this conversation between James Hoff and Hannah B Higgins will consider the haptic and performative dimensions of artists’ books and what is lost and gained in the reproduction of such unique titles. This program is presented as part of the NY Art Book Fair’s Classroom series, co-presented by Printed Matter and Dia Art Foundation. Learn more about the Classroom here. Hannah B Higgins is a professor at the School of Art and Art History at the University of Illinois Chicago and founder of the interdisciplinary BA in IDEAS (Interdisciplinary Education in the Arts). Her books include Fluxus Experience (2002) and The Grid Book (2009). With Douglas Kahn, she co-edited Mainframe Experimentalism: Early Computing and the Foundations of Digital Art (2012). She is currently completing The People’s Flag, which is expected to be published in 2025. Higgins is co-executor, with her twin sister, Jessica, of the estate of Fluxus artist and Something Else Press publisher, Dick Higgins. James Hoff is an artist living in New York. His work encompasses a variety of media, including painting, sound, and performance, as well as a publishing practice with the organization Primary Information, New York, which he co-founded. Recently, his work has focused on language and ambient media at the intersection of developing technologies and networked communication, and in relation to social, political, and sonic space. He has exhibited and performed at cultural organizations throughout North America and Europe.

Her practice encompasses sculpture, drawing, and video art. Recent solo exhibitions include Failure Detection, MoMA PS1, Queens (2018); and Fake Truth, Kunstverein Braunschweig, Germany (2019). Recent group exhibitions include those at the New Museum, New York (2021); 59th Venice Biennale: The Milk of Dreams (2022); and the Drawing Center, New York (2023). Phillips lives in Berlin and Chicago.

Presence, Absence, and Hallucination is a performance, reading, and sound activation of space-time dimensions in order to pressurize modes and forms of reality (in its glitchy, elusive, shapeshifting capacity) as it is perceived, experienced, and documented—ecologically, historically, sociologically, philosophically, and ever more frequently using artificial intelligence. Three prose texts by Brenda Iijima act as reference points for a collaboration with sound artist Johann Diedrick that opens pathways and trace resonances into the prismatic densities of the past, present, and future. Brenda Iijima is a poet, novelist, playwright, choreographer, and visual artist. She is the author of nine books of poetry. Her artistic and conceptual interests occur at the intersections and mutations of genre, mode, receptivity, and field of study. In her current work she engages with submerged and occluded histories, other-than-human expressiveness, and telluric awareness in all forms. A novella, A roundtable, unanimous dreamers chime in, written in collaboration with Janice Lee, was published by Meekling Press in 2023. In 2024, two of Iijima’s works have been published: the play Daily Life in China with elis press, as well as the novel Presence with the University of Georgia Press. Iijima is the founding editor-publisher of Portable Press @ Yo-Yo Labs. She lives in Brooklyn. Johann Diedrick is an artist and engineer who makes listening rooms, spaces for encountering new sonic possibilities off-the-grid. He works to surface resonant histories of past interactions inscribed in material and embedded in space, peeling back layers to reveal hidden memories and untold stories. He shares his tools and techniques through listening tours, workshops, and open-source hardware and software. He is the founder of A Quiet Life, a sonic engineering and research studio that designs and builds audio-related software and hardware products. He is a 2023–25 Just Tech fellow and 2023–24 Performance AIRspace Resident at Abrons Art Center, New York. His work has been featured in The Wire and Musicworks and presented at the Ars Electronica Festival, Linz, Austria; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; and MoMA PS1, Queens.
