Designed for all ages, Saturday Studio is a family friendly program that is most suitable for children ages five and up. All families participating in the Saturday Studio program receive free admission to Dia:Beacon for the day. Saturday Studio begins promptly at 10:30 am on the second Saturday of every month. The reservation window is now closed; limited space is available on Saturday, September 14, and is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The sign-up process begins in the admissions area at 10 am. Reservations open one week in advance of the event. For more information about Saturday Studio artist educators and workshops, sign up for the Saturday Studio mailing list or e-mail beaconprogram@diaart.org.

James Meyer draws on a diverse range of topics from popular culture and contemporary art, including reenactments of civil rights, antiwar, and feminist marches, paintings, sculptures, photographs, novels, and films. Meyer is a curator of modern art at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, and the curatorial and academic advisor at Dia Art Foundation. Meyer will introduce his book, followed by a conversation with artist An-My Lê and author Jennifer Egan.Doors will open at 4 pm and the conversation will commence at 4:30 pmAdmission is freeSigned books will be available for purchaseReservations encouraged James Meyer is a curator of modern art at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and curatorial and academic advisor at Dia Art Foundation in New York City. He was previously the Winship Distinguished Research Associate Professor of Art History at Emory University in Atlanta and deputy director and chief curator at Dia. Jennifer Egan is a journalist and the author of several novels and one short story collection. Her most recent novel, Manhattan Beach (2017), a New York Times bestseller, was awarded the 2018 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. Her previous novel, A Visit from the Goon Squad (2010), won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize, National Book Critics Circle Award, and Los Angeles Times book prize. She has also written frequently for the New York Times Magazine. She is currently the president of PEN America. An-My Lê was born in Saigon, Republic of Vietnam (now Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) in 1960. Lê fled South Vietnam with her family in 1975, the final year of the war, eventually settling in the United States as a political refugee. She received a Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Science in biology from Stanford University (1981, 1985) and a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University (1993). Since 1998, she has been affiliated with Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, where she is currently a professor in the department of photography. Her work has been exhibited at such venues as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Tickets are also available for purchase (credit card only) at the door, subject to availability. Annette Lawrence was born in Rockville Centre, New York, in 1965. Her practice is characterized by transforming raw data into drawings, objects, and installations in an attempt to contend with what counts, how it is counted, and who is counting. Lawrence’s work has been widely exhibited and has been acquired by Artpace San Antonio, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and Rachofsky Collection in Dallas, among others. Her work was included in the 1997 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. She received a BFA from the Hartford Art School in Connecticut, and an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. She is also an alumna of the Core Program at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. Lawrence lives and works in Denton, Texas, where she is a professor of studio art in the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas.

Johannes Stüttgen was born in 1945 in Frývaldov, Czechoslovakia (now Jeseník, Czech Republic). From 1966 to 1971, he studied under Joseph Beuys at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he was also a colleague of Jörg Immendorff, Imi Knoebel, and Blinky Palermo. With Beuys, Stüttgen founded the art action initiative Omnibus for Direct Democracy in Germany and remained a close collaborator until the artist’s death in 1986. Stüttgen later became the managing director of the Free International University for Creativity and Interdisciplinary Research, and head of Raum 3, Beuys’s former studio at the Kunstakademie. In 2004 Stüttgen received an honorary fellowship from Oxford Brookes University for his work on social sculpture, a theory pioneered by Beuys to expand the notion of art into the everyday. He is a cofounder and chairman of Kinderstern (Star for Children), a nonprofit organization serving children in need through the sale of the Imi Knoebel’s work of the same name in an unlimited edition. Stüttgen lives and works in Düsseldorf.
