Alan Michelson was born in Buffalo in 1953. A Mohawk member of Six Nations of the Grand River, Michelson works in a range of media and with materials sourced from both indigenous and Western cultures to create site-specific works that draw on repressed histories. Recent solo exhibitions include Historicity, Woodland Cultural Centre, Brantford, Ontario (2018); Wolf Nation, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2019); and Prophetstown, Thomas Cole National Historic Site, Catskill, New York (2024). Recent group exhibitions include those at MoMA PS1, Queens (2021); Tate Modern, London (2022); and the 14th Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (2023). Michelson lives in New York.
