In partnership with Electronic Arts Intermix, Dia Art Foundation presents a selection of films to accompany the Dia:Beacon exhibition Charlotte Posenenske: Work in Progress, the first North American retrospective dedicated to the German artist.
Constituting Posenenske’s only experiment with moving image, Monotonie ist schön (Monotony Is Nice, 1968) features a series of Super 8 films shot spontaneously while traveling through the Netherlands. Shot through the car window, the amateur footage highlights the artist’s fascination with the repetitive succession of industrial infrastructure—bridges, dykes, and roads—through the car’s window. Monotony Is Nice captures the unexpected formal qualities of the manmade landscape.
Renowned filmmaker Gerry Schum’s Happening Abend (Dies alles Herzchen wird einmal dir gehören) (Happening Night [All this, darling, will one day be yours], 1967) documents the raucous event of the same name organized by Paul Maenz and Peter Roehr at Galerie Dorothea Loehr. Happening Night also features the ephemeral artworks conceived for the occasion by Posenenske as well as the other local and international artists who participated in the infamous evening.
Predating his pioneering broadcasts Land Art (1968) and Identifications (1970), Schum’s television documentary Konsumkunst – Kunstkonsum (Consumption Art – Art Consumption, 1968) investigates the rise of multiples as art objects and explores industrial reproduction processes within the flourishing West German art market of the time. Posenenske’s Vierkantrohre Serie D and DW (Square Tubes Series D and DW, 1967– ) are showcased among a variety of approaches to serial and affordable art production.
Films in German. Text translations provided.
