Recreational Meeting: Moving Image with Eduardo Williams

Session Description Recreational Meeting: Moving Image with Eduardo Williams Developed in collaboration with filmmaker Eduardo “Teddy” Williams, this walking session explores the relationship between movement, the camera, and our environment. Program Description Fridays, February 5–March 12, 2021, 3–4:15 pm, Dia Online Facilitated by artist and Dia educator Stephen Kwok in collaboration with a series of guest artists, these workshops invite participants to reimagine digital platforms and the social formats that they prescribe through experimental and experiential exercises. In practice, these sessions explore how distance may enable, rather than limit, engagement with our surroundings, ourselves, and each other. Stephen Kwok makes experimental events that incorporate sculpture, live performance, digital media, and text. He holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in business administration from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He was an artist-in-residence at Delfina Foundation’s Performance as Process program in London. Kwok has exhibited at Seoul Museum of Art; Surplus Space, Wuhan; Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; Center for Performance Research, Brooklyn; Julius Caesar Gallery, Chicago; Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans; and Lawndale Art Center, Houston. Eduardo Williams was born in 1987 in Argentina. He studied at the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires before joining Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains in Tourcoing, France, in 2012. Williams’s short films Pude ver un puma (2011) and Que je tombe tout le temps? (2013) premiered at Cannes Film Festival, and Tôi quên rồi! (2014) at FID Marseille. His first feature, El auge del humano (2016), won the Golden Leopard award at the 2016 Locarno Film Festival. His most recent short film, Parsi (2018), premiered at the TK date Berlinale, and has since been shown at Tate Modern, London; Lincoln Center, New York City; and other festivals and museums.

Event DetailsSunday, February 28, 2021, 10:30–11:15 amLive on Zoom Session DescriptionFor this session, families will create collaborative sound drawings through an online platform, using listening skills, notation, and instruments found at home to build a communal space of making while maintaining a distance. Hosted on Zoom by artist and educator Audra Wolowiec, each session is free and recommended for families with children ages 5 and up. Space is limited and reservations are required. At-Home MaterialsIn addition to a device that can join a Zoom video call, you will need the following materials at home: Paper or drawing surfaces. This could be anything that you have at home to draw on, such as a sketchbook, used cardboard, paper bags, etc. Mark-making or drawing materials like pencils, colored pencils, crayons, pens, markers, or chalk. Recommended materials (not necessary): Collage materials like colorful paper, old magazines, scissors, and glue stick. Instruments or objects that make sound, from quiet to loud. Participants may request materials in the reservation form for the program. Audra Wolowiec is an artist and educator whose work oscillates between sculpture, installation, text, and performance with an emphasis on sound and the material qualities of language. She is interested in how sound can create spaces of listening and connection. She teaches at Parsons School of Design and runs an independent publishing platform called Gravel Projects.

They have exhibited their work and performed at venues including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; ICA Philadelphia; and Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, New York. Their memoir Girl Boy Girl: How I Became JT LeRoy (Seven Stories Press) was published in 2007 and subsequently adapted it into a screenplay, which in 2019 became a feature-length film that they coproduced titled JT Leroy. Knoop has written essays for the Los Angeles Review of Books, Dazed and Confused Magazine, BOMB, Critical Correspondence, and Cultured.

Deacon’s work has been presented throughout Europe, the United States, and Asia. He is a professor of performance at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
